Prepping your record bag in Traktor with the Midi Fighter 3D (Mapping)

Midi Fighter 3D

Bamboo’s playlist prep tool.

Back before the digital world, right before a gig, I would have to go through my records and fill up my bag with the vinyl I would most likely play depending upon the gig. Fast forward to today, I needed something to quickly go through my tracks from various playlists and add said tracks to a preparation playlist, or, my digital record bag if you will. I created this mapping to work with the midi fighter 3D from DJ Tech Tools. It will be available for free from the DJ Tech Tools mapping database on their site.

This map reduces the time needed to prepare your tracks. It should only be turned on during this time otherwise it will interfere with other maps. Continue reading

WIP Bans Traktor, but what really is the problem?

Im not sure if you heard, but the Spanish Promotion Agency, WIP, banned Traktor from  their events. They informed everyone by making a now deleted note on Facebook, got picked up by all the big online mags.. Mixmag, DJ Techtools and a whole bunch of other sites…

Before we get started here is a quote from the note (via DJ Tech Tools):

“The real issue is with “artists” who swear they can play any format be it CD, vinyl, usb and or Traktor but whose Traktor sets are nothing but stale, bland and outright insulting to a paying crowd and promoter.

We’ve  also grown tired of the endless issues with missing cables, problems with timecode (learn how to use your gear before you play out), taking up the previous Dj’s time to set up your gear (cause you didn’t want to come to the club early and set up your Traktor), how is it you play 5 times a week and still don’t know how to set it up right?

And, more importantly we’re fed up with the general laziness shown by 99% of “artists” that we’ve seen and heard playing Traktor.”

Personally I think that this is starting to highlight a major problem with today’s DJ and Promoter.

Who doesn’t like some free music? The Bamboo Podcast is up!

I have restarted my podcast on iTunes, with mixes from the past… New mixes will also be up on there. So if you love some good house or techno… then subscribe today! I will also host guest DJ mixes every now and then.

iTunes link to the Bamboo Podcast (sk)

Episode 1 is going to include 4 mixes… All free and available for downloading and all your burning pleasures. All I ask is that you enjoy them… Being a part of history I decided to share them with you all.

Life is Good cover imageFirst mix “Jungle:istix” is from 1993 when I still spun Drum & Bass… or Jungle as it was called. It is a very airy, intelligent sound.. more of a rainy day mix. It was recorded on CDJs way back when, when I was told I wasn’t a DJ because I used CDs. (Sounds familiar? Now that I am using a laptop) The irony is that it went from digital to analog and now back to digital. In either case I hope you enjoy the mix, I remember making it way so long ago.

Jungle:istix cover (1993)The Second mix was from the 1996 era, I believe recorded live at a rave? I called the tape ‘Life is Good’. Back in 96 everything was pretty good. I start off with some house music some classics can be heard, such as the HA Dance… Progresses into techno and acid techno. A lot of those tracks were white labels and it’s been so long on both of these mixes that I don’t have a track list. So I apologize.

Every week I am going to try and upload some new music, some past mixes… Some new mixes… if you love some good house, tech house or techno then this is your new home.

Welcome.

So a little explanation is in order. I was mixing out of DJ Matt Kinney who was on a vinyl Serato setup and then it fades out a bit quickly near the end, trust me it sounded good live when DJ Dread took over on the vinyl Traktor setup.

I did this with my lovely Traktor Kontrol S2 ‘Bumblebee’ with the S2D2 Mappings – created by the very talented developer, Jiggle. Live at my residency in Stamford, CT:  Relax Sundays
